Jan. 13, 2025

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategic Plan on January 10. This plan provides a roadmap for using AI in Health, Human Services, and Public Health.

With the plan, HHS will focus on four key goals across several domains in Health and Human Services:

  • Catalyzing health AI innovation and adoption to unlock new ways to improve people’s lives
  • Promoting trustworthy AI development and ethical and responsible use to avoid potential harm
  • Democratizing AI technologies and resources to promote access
  • Cultivating AI-empowered workforces and organization cultures to effectively and safely use AI

The executive summary notes that AI has or will directly or indirectly affect every American’s healthcare and human services experience. “Therefore, the development and deployment of AI in Health and Human Services settings should focus on providing tangible benefits for people who use or receive these services.”

The plan states that HHS is dedicated to advancing the adoption of AI to achieve enhanced outcomes and protect patients, caregivers, and all stakeholders from potential pitfalls.
