Turnbull named CHIME-HIMSS 2012 CIO of the Year

CHIME and HIMSS will recognize James Turnbull, FHIMSS, as the recipient of the 2012 John E. Gall, Jr., CIO of the Year Award. Turnbull is chief information officer at University of Utah Health Care (UUHC), the intermountain west’s largest academic healthcare system, located in Salt Lake City. Turnbull will receive the award at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans on March 5, 2013.

The award, sponsored by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and HIMSS, recognizes healthcare IT executives who have made significant contributions to their organization and demonstrated innovative leadership through effective use of technology. The boards of directors for both organizations annually select the recipient of the award, which is named in honor of the late John E. Gall, Jr., who pioneered implementation of the first fully integrated medical information system in the world at California’s El Camino Hospital in the 1960s.

Turnbull’s distinguished career in the healthcare industry spans more than 37 years, split between the Canadian and American health systems. His accomplishments include the deployment of electronic medical records and installation of CPOE at three different health systems with three different vendor products.

Prior to joining UUHC in 2008, he served as senior vice president and CIO at The Children’s Hospital in Denver from 2000-2007, and senior vice president and CIO at Sarasota Memorial Hospital from 1993-2000.

Turnbull is a former chair of the CHIME Board of Trustees and a fellow and former president of HIMSS. He is a lifetime honorary member of HIMSS and has been a CHIME member since 1993. His academic background includes a BA in Organizational Psychology, an MBA from the University of Western Ontario and a DHA from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Mobile Computing Trends

Tablet computing goes big time

What do you call a high-def tablet so big that it can become its own table for work and play? A table PC, of course. That’s what Lenovo unveiled at the huge International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. The multi-touch IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC is 27 inches of Windows 8 high-performance desktop computing that demonstrates the growing trend of larger form factors for skinnier PCs that can support multiple users simultaneously. Not big enough for you? A widescreen 39-incher is in the works. See it in action at http://tinyurl.com/aomcyth or go to www.lenovo.com/products/us/desktop/ideacentre/horizon/.

3M took the bigger-is-better computing-size challenge one step further at CES by demonstrating an 84-inch multi-touch display prototype that’s great for a wall or interactive table use. Find out more about 3M Multi-Touch solutions at www.3m.com/multitouch.

Primary Care Physicians

Technology trends for PCPs

Epocrates recently released the results of its annual survey of primary care physicians that takes a look at the biggest trends and challenges facing PCPs today, including patient care, technology adoption, practice concerns and the future of healthcare. Highlights of the poll of 2,743 PCPs that use Epocrates point-of-care digital solutions include:

  • National issues have a big impact. Eighty percent of PCPs report they remain concerned about the primary care shortage. Additionally, almost a third of PCPs feel that achieving meaningful use is not worth the effort in the long run because they believe it hasn’t improved the quality of care (77 percent), that the transition will increase administrative burdens (69 percent) or that federal incentives fall short of covering the cost of EMR adoption (53 percent).
  • Looking into the crystal ball. When asked what the biggest focus for their specialty will be in 2013, physician reimbursement, access to care and EHRs/EMRs topped the list.
  • Tablet adoption continues to grow. More than one in four PCPs currently use a tablet in practice, up from 20 percent in 2011. Among these tablet users, 79 percent use the Apple iPad and 22 percent plan to purchase the iPad Mini.
  • Apps are increasingly part of prescription. It’s no longer just medications that are being prescribed to patients. Almost half of PCPs now recommend mobile apps to their patients to help them manage their medical conditions, with a quarter recommending mobile apps to their patients on a weekly basis. Top recommended apps include patient education apps (72 percent) and lifestyle change tools such as calorie trackers (68 percent). Among those who do not recommend mobile apps to patients, more than 50 percent say they do not do so because they aren’t sure which apps are best to share with patients.
