This year, however, for the first time ever, vendors were also asked to estimate the percentage of revenue earned in all of their product segments. Beyond presenting the product segment revenues in each company listing, Healthcare Informatics editors wanted to further breakdown the top revenue earners in each of our seven segments: Financial Information Systems, Clinical Information Systems, Data Analytics, Data Management, Data Security, Data Exchange, and Consulting Services.
Throughout the next several days, Healthcare Informatics will reveal its top 5 companies by revenue—based on percentage of total health IT revenue—within these seven different categories. Serving as a supplement to the broader Healthcare Informatics 100 list, we hope that this data, along with the brief content that accompanies it, gives you our readers, a greater sense into the latest market trends within each of these respective product categories.

The Clinical Information Systems category is one that involves such diversity of solutions that it can be difficult to generalize about. Even the largest subcategory within the Clinical Information Systems category, that of electronic health record (EHR) systems, can be difficult to generalize about, given how diverse the major EHR vendors are, along numerous dimensions; though massive consolidation is undeniably bringing down the number of EHR vendors overall.
Still, certain things are clear, including the fact that clinical IS vendors are working to improve the functionality and features of their EHR and other offerings. “As large-scale enterprise EHR implementations decelerate, providers are leveraging these systems to solve today’s business issues like population health, clinical integration, mergers and acquisitions, and growing access and capacity,” says Myra Aubuchon, a St. Louis-based principal with The Chartis Group, the Chicago-based consulting firm. Further, says Aubuchon, the clinical performance excellence leader for the firm’s informatics and technology practice, “Vendors’ investments are on developing and enhancing their solutions to support these strategic business imperatives and the resulting redesigned operational processes for care management, care coordination, new care models as well as an enhanced patient experience.”
