General Catalyst Partner Network Expands to 15 Health Systems
Healthcare Innovation wrote a news item earlier this week about the new partnership between UC Davis Health and venture capital firm General Catalyst, but it turns out that was just the tip of the iceberg. General Catalyst has actually grown its inaugural group of health system partners to 15.
Besides UC Davis Health, other members of the network include HCA Healthcare, Jefferson Health, Intermountain Healthcare, Wellspan Health, Guy’s & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, Cincinnati Children’s, UCI Health, Health First, Metro Health, Medical University of South Carolina Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Banner Health, Universal Health Services, and OhioHealth.
In a blog post, the General Catalyst team said that each of these systems is a market leader in their own right, all having demonstrated the ability to respond to emerging healthcare challenges through dynamic leadership and innovative approaches. Together, this ecosystem serves approximately 10 percent of the entire United States population across 43 states.
The firm said the health systems also represent the diversity of the healthcare marketplace–with different geographic footprints, patient populations, areas of specialization and care models. “This is by design; we believe that only by understanding the nuanced needs of each type of system can we ultimately create next generation platforms that work for all of them. We believe that the cross-pollination of learnings that will come from this group can be a powerful antidote to today’s broken and siloed system,” the blog post said.
General Catalyst said it is in a unique position to work alongside these health systems as an embedded strategic collaborator, with the ability to tap into the more than 90 healthcare companies in its portfolio and beyond, and with the aim of creating the right technology platforms to accelerate the digital transformation of care.
The effort is being led by Daryl Tol, head of the Health Assurance Ecosystem, who joined General Catalyst six months ago from Advent Health, where he was president and CEO.
