Permanente Medicine Mid-Atlantic, Techstars Launch Accelerator

Startups to benefit from Permanente Medicine’s resources, mentorship opportunities, and strategic support to develop healthcare solutions

The Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group is working with tech accelerator company Techstars to launch a new healthcare accelerator program designed to support early-stage companies focused on addressing critical healthcare challenges and improving patient outcomes.

The new program brings together the expertise of Permanente Medicine Mid-Atlantic’s nearly 1,800 physicians in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia, spanning more than 60 medical and surgical specialties and sub-specialties, and Techstars’ accelerator model, which has launched more than 750 startups in healthcare.

The accelerator program will take place in-person in Washington, D.C.. Techstars said that Permanente Medicine Mid-Atlantic’s approach to delivering value-based care provides an ideal environment for startups to validate and refine their healthcare solutions.

Innovation is fundamental to raising the bar," said Richard McCarthy, M.D., executive medical director of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, in a statement. "We are excited to see how this collaboration with Techstars will yield solutions that make even higher quality healthcare more prevalent and lead to more streamlined and improved experiences for patients receiving care and physicians delivering care.”

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, solutions addressing: next-generation diagnostics and decision support, hybrid and virtual care models, longevity and preventive health, chronic disease management, patient safety, women’s health, personalized and precision medicine, predictive analytics, advanced home-based care, supportive and palliative care, predictive analytics, support of shared decision-making, neurological and cognitive health, mental and behavioral health integration, mobility, physical function, and fall prevention, social and financial determinants of aging, surgical and perioperative care, clinical workforce enablement, upskilling, operations and workflow automation, and more.

"Entrepreneurs are central to transformation in healthcare," said Keith Camhi, managing director at Techstars, in a statement. "The opportunity to collaborate with a prominent healthcare provider like Permanente Medicine, combined with Techstars' programming, capital and network, amplifies their ability to create meaningful impact."
