CHIME Awards Hospital for Patient Engagement Project
The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) has awarded NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) and Siemens Healthcare with its annual Collaboration Award for working together to improve NYP’s patient portal with an agile development model that resulted in rapid deployment and measurably increased patient engagement and satisfaction. The award was given out at CHIME’s annual Fall Forum, this year taking place in Indian Wells, Calif.
According to CHIME, the collaborative project lead to a 42 percent increase of appointments scheduled using myNYP.org, and lowered the no-show rated from 20 percent to 12 percent over a period of six months after the functionality was made available in January 2012. In addition, the project also allowed for the creation of a way for NYP to send reminder messages to patient phones and other mobile devices, and allow for return communication from patient devices back into the information infrastructure. In all, 7,000 patient communication preferences (text/phone/email) were collected.
“An open platform approach to healthcare information technology is expected to deliver much-needed relief to technology managers challenged to make data available,” Aurelia G. Boyer, senior vice president and chief information officer, NYP, said in a statement. “Our work with Siemens has helped us develop a more patient-centric approach by connecting the diverse health information systems from hospital to home to community.
In addition, CHIME also gave awards to John Glaser, Ph.D., CEO, Siemens Healthcare, for a lifetime achievement in health IT, and Edward Martinez, senior vice president and chief information officer of Miami Children's Hospital, as Innovator of the Year for its eHealth Initiative.
