Key industries faced a 55 percent increase in attacks over the last four years, NETSCOUT reports

On October 2, NETSCOUT, a global network monitoring company, announced the findings of its latest DDoS Threat Intelligence Report. “DDoS attacks continue to evolve, using innovative technologies and approaches to disrupt networks,” according to the press release.

The report indicated a 55 percent increase over the past four years in DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Attacks on critical infrastructure, chief among them being in the health sector. There was a 43 percent increase in application-layer attacks and a 30 percent increase in volumetric attacks, especially in Europe and the Middle East. Bot-infected devices increased by 50 percent, the news release stated.

“Hacktivist activities continue to plague global organizations with more sophisticated and coordinated DDoS attacks against multiple targets simultaneously,” said Richard Hummel, director of threat intelligence at NETSCOUT in a statement. “As adversaries use more resilient, take-down-resistant networks, detection and mitigation are more challenging. This report gives network operations teams insights to fine-tune their strategies to stay ahead of these evolving threats.”

NETSCOUT urged organizations to plan for DDoS protection in case of splitting off network portions.
