Change Healthcare Tallies 190 Million Data Breach Victims
The tally of Change Healthcare breach victims is now up to 190 million, its parent company, UnitedHealth Group, stated. This is 90 million more than was reported in July. Change Healthcare first reported the cyber-attack on Feb 21, 2024.
UnitedHealth Group shared with TechCrunch on Jan. 24, "Change Healthcare has determined the estimated total number of individuals impacted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack is approximately 190 million."
Cost related to the breach reached $3.1 billion, which UnitedHealth Group announced on Jan 16 when it released its financial results.
“Even before the revised breach count, the attack against Change Healthcare, one of the country's biggest healthcare payment processing companies, already ranked as the worst healthcare data breach of 2024,” Mathew J. Schwartz reported for Healthcare Info Security.
ALPHV/Blackcat, a ransomware group, was identified as the cybercrime threat actor behind the security breach on Change Healthcare, the company reported through its incident tracker on Feb. 29.
Several health organizations have filed lawsuits against UnitedHealth Group.
