According to a news report from WFTV in Osceola County, Fla., an employee at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, a 112-bed acute care facility, has been arrested by local authorities, after he allegedly accessed more than 760,000 patient records from 2009-11, and sold them. The report from WFTV says the accused former employee, 35-year-old Dale Munroe, worked as a registration representative in the emergency department, as was able to access records throughout the hospital via a computer system.
WFTV says that Munroe’s wife, 31-year-old Katrina, and another alleged conspirator, 30-year-old, April Baker, were also suspects. However, only charges have been filed against Dale Munroe. In the article, the hospital said a person in his position would have only accessed 12,000 records in the three year period.
The federal complaint and investigation claims Munroe sold the records to the agent of a medical center, chiropractic clinics, and an injury hotline. The complain says that Munroe sold the details for an average of $1,200. It also details how one patient who was in a motor vehicle accident had later received a call from an unknown caller that knew all about the accident. The victim’s mother called Florida Hospital Celebration about the breach, and that’s when the hospital went into a thorough investigation and discovered Munroe’s alleged breach.
In an accompanying article, WFTV interviewed one of the people’s whose data was breached. The patient said he wanted to see more people arrested.
