Physician Practice vendors have grown to over $2B in total revenue last year, and the EMR feeding frenzy has led to far more automation of the thinner and simpler paper charts in physician offices. Indeed, there are really two sub-markets within this group:
Practice Management Systems - (does anyone know of an acronym that won't bring giggles from the ladies?) which traditionally include:
Scheduling
Registration
Patient billing and AR
Ambulatory EMRs - the same electronic medical record that has become hospitals' holy grail of late, with:
Patient history and physicals
Test results from reference labs or internal instruments
Physician notes and progress reports
Almost all of the vendors listed here offer both a PMS and EMR, with the selling emphasis on the EMR piece in these days of ARRA. Interestingly, many HIS vendors also offer physician practice systems, although all but one are interfaced systems that were developed/acquired independently from their main HIS product.

Examples include:
McKesson, which acquired Practice Partners and also offers Practice Point Plus.
Siemens, which partners with NextGen for an EMR and offers its own Signature PMS.
GE, which acquired Logician from MedicaLogic, a leading and extremely robust EMR.
Meditech, which owns a controlling interest in LSS (Lake Superior Systems).
To be fair, however, only one vendor has ever gone the other way: starting with physician practice PMS/EMR and then developing a fully integrated hospital EMR to boot. Can you guess who has achieved this Epic feat? - V.C., B.A.
