Chicago-based EHR vendor, Allscripts, recently launched a $1 Million Health Innovation Program, which includes an open app challenge aiming to get developers to create and integrate applications that can become an extension of its Allscripts Open Electronic Health Records software.  The app challenge is offering $750,000 in total awards, with the overall winner taking home $250,000.

According to Allscripts, the goal is to give providers an easier way to add apps to their workflow that can improve patient outcomes. Apps that focus on the management of high cost chronic diseases and value-based care imperatives will be rewarded.

"We want the smartest people, whether physicians, nurses, caregivers or IT professionals inside and outside the industry to use their creative energy to solve real problems in healthcare. We intend to inspire developers to start a revolution by pushing the boundaries of what information technology can do to improve quality of care for patients and also keep them healthy in the first place," Glen Tullman, CEO of Allscripts, said in a statement.

The first part of the challenge will honor 15 developers with awards of $10,000 each for different categories such as management of various chronic diseases, value-based care, patient engagement, and reducing readmissions. In the second part of the challenge, Allscripts says it will award $250,000 for the application that demonstrates the most positive clinical, financial or performance improvement results after deployment at a client site.

Allscripts announced the initiative at the Health 2.0 Conference in San Francisco.
