Cerner, one of the largest electronic health record (EHR) vendors in the industry, is setting out to double its workforce in the next ten years.

The company announced the plans in a ground breaking ceremony on the company’s new campus in the Kansas City, Mo. area. Attending the ceremony were Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and several other high ranking politicians in the area. The new campus is a $4.45 billion development will aim to create up to 16,000 new jobs in the next decade. Currently, Cerner employs 14,200.

“Cerner’s multi-billion dollar investment represents a huge vote of confidence in the skills of our workforce and the strength of our economy. By redeveloping hundreds of acres of a blighted area and creating up to 16,000 jobs, Cerner’s Trails Campus will have a profound and positive impact on this region and our state for decades to come,” Nixon said in a statement.

The site will be developed over the course of 10 years through 16 phases. It will consist of 16 buildings with office space, data centers, a service center, a conference center, and various onsite amenities. It will also include retail space that provides options for stores and a hotel.
