Jan. 14, 2015
athenahealth, the Watertown, Mass.-based provider of cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) systems, is making its way to rural America, with an acquisition of RazorInsights.
RazorInsights, a Kennesaw, Ga.-based company, provides EHR systems to rural, critical access, and community hospitals. The acquisition allows athenahealth, which serves office-based and ambulatory providers, to expand to an inpatient hospital market. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Today’s hospital market is woefully underserved when it comes to IT systems and IT partners that are accountable for reducing costs, increasing quality, and enabling a better patient experience,” Jonathan Bush, chairman and CEO, athenahealth, said ina statement. “With RazorInsights, athenahealth will immediately be injected into the inpatient care environment; this is a natural extension for our cloud-based services, will tremendously grow our network knowledge, and will accelerate our introduction of results-oriented, inpatient solutions that hospitals can confidently invest in and demand accountability from.”
RazorInsights is a relatively new company to the EHR landscape. It started in 2010 and has grown to service 25 provider organizations in 15 states. The company has also received some minimal venture capital funding since it was founded. It claims to have the most meaningful use Stage 2 attestations in the country, thus far.
The move is athenahealth's first major acquisition since it bought mobile health company Epocrates in 2013 for nearly $300 million.
