Precision medicine is all the rage, with the Chicago-based electronic health record (EHR) system vendor, Allscripts being the latest company to dip its toes in genomics.

The company announced this week a partnership with the Culver City, Calif.-based NantHealth, a precision medicine software vendor. The two organizations aim to introduce clinical decision support software that uses complex genomic and proteomic analysis, and is integrated into the Allscripts EHR system.

"Our goal is to enable physicians to make better, more informed decisions, provide best-in-class patient care and monitor the effectiveness and progress of treatment, using real-time clinical and pan-omic data never before available," stated Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D. founder and CEO of NantHealth. "We look forward to working in partnership with the Allscripts team as the first major Clinical EMR vendor to take a major advancement towards the interoperability necessary to enable physicians and patients to stay engaged and active - before, during and after treatment - and enable the most appropriate, personalized intervention as early as possible."

The announcement comes weeks after President Obama unveiled a $215 million precision medicine initiative. The $215 million investment will provide the National Institutes of Health (NIH), together with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) support for various projects that aim to bolster precision medicine efforts in the U.S.
