Imprivata, a Lexington, Mass.-based health IT security vendor, has acquired HT Systems, a Tampa, Fla.-based provider of palm-vein based biometric patient identification systems for approximately $19.1 million in cash at closing.

The company will also pay up to $1.9 million in retention-based payments two years from closing plus up to $5.0 million based on achieving certain sales targets over the two-year period following the transaction.

Imprivata, which provides provider-based two-factor authentication security technology, says the new technology will be used to for patient engagement. HT Systems’ technology has been used to identify more than 22 million patients across 65 healthcare systems, it claimed. The technology reads palms and has the ability to retrieve their medical record in the healthcare provider’s electronic health record system at patient check-in, the company says.

“Without systems for secure patient identification and access, meaningful patient engagement across the care continuum will be nearly impossible,” Omar Hussain, president and CEO of Imprivata, said in a statement.
