UPMC Entering Ohio Market With Trinity Health System Acquisition

CommonSpirit Health, UPMC have signed a definitive agreement to transfer ownership of four-hospital Trinity Health System

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) plans to enter the Ohio market through the acquisition of four-hospital Trinity Health System from CommonSpirit Health.

In early 2025, CommonSpirit and Trinity leaders initiated a search to identify a regional health system partner for Trinity. Now UPMC and CommonSpirit have signed a definitive agreement to transfer ownership of Steubenville, Ohio-based Trinity Health System, including Trinity West, Trinity East, Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital, Trinity Twin City Medical Center, and associated clinics, to UPMC.

"Trinity Health System and UPMC share a commitment to providing top-tier care and serving the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Dwayne Richardson, interim president of Trinity Health System, in a statement. "UPMC's proven track record of community service and compassionate approach to care were key factors in our decision, and will significantly benefit our patients.”

UPMC, which has 40 hospitals and 800 outpatient sites in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland, as well as overseas, already has ties to Trinity. Physicians and other clinical staff at Trinity and UPMC have collaborated on several initiatives, including:
• A partnership in local cancer treatment which extends UPMC Hillman Cancer Center’s medical oncology services to the local community. This partnership has brought leading-edge cancer expertise and treatment to the area.
• Advanced orthopedic services, leveraging UPMC’s renowned expertise to deliver specialized bone and joint care to our community.

“At the heart of this integration is the enduring commitment of both teams to deliver compassionate, high-quality clinical care and exceptional community services to the Ohio Valley,” said Leslie Davis, president and CEO of UPMC, in a statement. “We appreciate CommonSpirit Health’s thoughtful diligence in choosing UPMC for the transfer of Trinity Health System. We look forward to a bright future ahead for our patients and community.”

The health systems said the transaction is expected to be completed in Fall 2026, pending regulatory review and customary closing conditions.
