According to new research from the Orem, Utah-based KLAS Research, various providers in the health information exchange (HIE) market have expressed dissatisfaction with their vendors thanks to continued connectivity issues. The report, "Health Information Exchange 2012: Muddled in Interfaces, looked at the insights of morethan 200 providers, who cited inadequate support around building timely interfaces for even the highest rated vendors.

"Building and supporting interfaces continues to be a big challenge for all vendors," report author Mark Allphin said in a statement. "Providers expect their health information exchange vendor to be an expert in moving data between multiple EMRs--regardless of the complexities or costs."

While vendors such as Epic, ICA, and MobileMD were reported by KLAS to offer better connectivity overall, there were still issues. For instance, KLAS said few Epic clients reported sharing data with non-Epic facilities. The report found that Cerner was the only vendor in the report whose satisfaction scores have improved over that same time period.

The report also found vendors are making strides with analytic reporting, patient portals, and physician engagement. The 11 vendors with the 80 percent share of the HIE market include Caradigm, Cerner, dbMotion, eClinicalWorks, Epic, ICA, Medicity, Orion Health, OptumInsight, RelayHealth, and Siemens.
