CHICAGO (July 15, 2010) – Joining the nation’s top nurse researchers, policymakers, scholars, executives and practitioners, HIMSS VP of informatics Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, has been recognized as a fellow with the American Academy of Nursing, a credential held by more than 1,600 nursing leaders throughout the world.
Each Fellow nominee must be sponsored by two current Academy Fellows. According to the AAN, Fellows are selected by a panel of elected and appointed Fellows with selection based, in part, on how nominees’ nursing careers influence health policies and healthcare delivery for the benefit of all Americans. A total of 116 nurse leaders, including Ms. Sensmeier, will be inducted into the Academy at the 37th Annual Meeting and Conference on Nov. 13 in Washington D.C.
Board Certified in Nursing informatics in 1996, Ms. Sensmeier joined HIMSS as the Director of Professional Services in 2000. As Vice President, she now oversees clinical informatics, standards, interoperability, and privacy and security initiatives working closely with HIMSS members, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.
She has been an involved leader in the harmonization and adoption of health IT standards during her decade at HIMSS. With co-sponsor Radiological Society of North America, she led HIMSS’s effort to develop and manage “Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise”, which drives the adoption of standards for clinical needs. She also led HIMSS’ involvement with the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel or HITSP, a federal standards harmonization initiative, while also collaborating with AMIA to form the Alliance for Nursing Informatics, an organization of 26 distinct nursing informatics organizations that she now co-chairs.
An international speaker and author of book chapters and white papers, Ms. Sensmeier also shares her informatics expertise as an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University in Chicago and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She received her BSN from Elmhurst College and her Master’s degree in Nursing Administration from St. Xavier University, both in Illinois.
