AHIMA announces new award to recognize outstanding achievement in health information management

March 29, 2012

CHICAGO, Ill. – March 26, 2012 – Healthcare delivery organizations that have outstanding and innovative approaches to health information management will be acknowledged by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) through a new award established this spring.

Named for founder Grace Whiting Myers, the AHIMA Grace Award: In Recognition of Excellence in Health Information Management will honor healthcare delivery organizations that demonstrate effective and innovative approaches in using health information to deliver high quality healthcare. Nomination applications are now available by visiting the AHIMA website. The inaugural award will be presented at the 84th AHIMA Annual Convention & Exhibit in Chicago Sept. 29-Oct. 4.

“We look forward to recognizing and sharing the best practices of organizations that are living AHIMA’s vision of quality healthcare through quality information,” said AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, FACHE. “This award will honor the best of the best of organizations that recognize the vital role health information plays in the continuum of care.”

Evaluation criteria include how organizations contribute to a patient-centered model of care, advance electronic health records and integrate HIM throughout the workplace.
Award judges will include a panel representing health care delivery organizations, health information professionals, and HIM associations including AHIMA.
Whiting Myers created the organization in 1928 in partnership with the American College of Surgeons who wanted to “elevate the standards of clinical records in hospitals and other medical institutions.” This farsighted recognition of the importance of medical record quality to patient care and research underlies the organization today.

“AHIMA looks forward to honoring those who demonstrate our values of quality, integrity, respect and leadership,” said Thomas Gordon. Application deadline is June 30, and award recipients will be notified this summer. More information is available at www.ahima.org/grace.
