MEDICA announces app competition winners

Nov. 19, 2015

MEDICA 2015 hosted its 4th annual live competition for the best Medical App for use in the daily routine of a doctor or in the hospital – the MEDICA App Competition 2015. On Tuesday, a panel of judges reviewed three minute pitch presentations from the ten finalists that were selected from seventy applications. The competition was part of the MEDICA Connected Healthcare Forum. This reporter was reminded of the pitches on the U.S. Shark Tank television show.

App developers from all over the world were encouraged to submit their medical app. The 10 developers whose apps matched the submission criteria based on the jury’s point of view will qualify for the participation at the live pitch at MEDICA. The voting process by the judges was very close. The presentations were all excellent.

The pitches included why the developer had felt there was a need for this app solution, who would benefit, costs, and ongoing business plan feasibility. The winner received the latest available Apple iPad and additionally one Exhibition Visitor Pass for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2016.

Compliance with ‘Medical Device Directive’ or ‘FDA Approval’ was not necessary, but many of the app developers were moving forward with approval applications.
