Celebrating the 2010 HCI Innovator Awards

Healthcare Informatics hosted a reception during the recent HIMSS Conference to honor the recipients of the 2010 HCI Innovator Awards. The event, which was sponsored by SSI Group, Sprint and Sunquest, was held at the W Hotel in downtown Atlanta, and was well attended by executives from both hospital organizations and industry-leading vendors.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, part of the 20-hospital UPMC health system, received first place for an innovative critical care dashboard that was created by leaders within the organization. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta placed second with a multi-layered initiative designed to educate patients and keep staff informed during the H1N1 outbreak, and Chester County Hospital (West Chester, Pa.) took third place for a project that used business process management to automate clinical processes for infection control.

Speakers at the event included Doug Bilbrey, executive vice president of sales and marketing for the SSI Group, as well as Mark Hagland, HCI’s editor-in-chief, and Charlene Marietti, executive director of editorial initiatives.  

James Levin, M.D., Ph.D., CMIO of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was on hand to accept the first place award. Praveen Chopra, vice president and CIO at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, received the second place award, and was joined by two key leaders on the project, Daniel Hirsch, M.D., pediatric emergency specialist, and Gary Frank, M.D., medical director for quality and medical management. Karen Pinsky, M.D., CMIO at Chester County Hospital, accepted the third place award.

Also in attendance at the event were executive leaders from several healthcare organizations, including: Rick Schooler, vice president and CIO, Orlando Health; Daniel Barchi, CIO of Carilion Clinic; Travis Gathright, CIO and corporate compliance officer, Magee Rehabilitation Hospital; Joe Bormel, M.D., MPH, chief medical officer and vice president of clinical product management, QuadraMed; Gwen Darling, CEO of HealthcareITCentral.com; and Tim Tolan, senior partner, Sanford Rose Associates. In addition, representatives from the three sponsoring companies were on hand for the reception, along with key staff members and leaders from organizations such as St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, Baylor Health Care System, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Mercy Health Partners and Witt/Kieffer.
