Last month the Washington, D.C.-based National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) released the results of its 2012 NeHC Stakeholder Survey, which featured the biggest challenges to achieving widespread health information exchange. Sixty-one percent of respondents said funding and sustainability was the main obstacle, while 53 percent said interoperability standards were hindering HIE adoption.
On Monday, April 2, the nonprofit will release a roadmap for health information exchange to help the industry overcome these challenges that has been vetted by more than 50 organizations and individuals. The roadmap will provide not only a summary of how the federal government is enabling and encouraging HIE, but also specific examples of how select HIEs are moving forward. HCI Associate Editor Jennifer Prestigiacomo caught up with NeHC’s CEO Kate Berry for more insight into this report and what are the major challenges organizations are facing with moving forward with health information exchange.
