Richard (Dick) Daniels, who has been serving as interim chief information officer of Kaiser Permanente since September 2014, has been named executive vice president and CIO, one of the highest-profile CIO positions in the industry.

Daniels was promoted on an interim basis last September when Phil Fasano left Kaiser to take a newly created CIO position at insurer American International Group Inc. After an extensive national search, Kaiser decided to stay in-house and chose Daniels to lead Kaiser Permanente’s IT organization, which has approximately 6,000 employees. (Kaiser serves more than 9.6 million members in eight states and the District of Columbia.)

Daniels has more than 30 years of information technology experience. Prior to stepping into the interim CIO role, he was senior vice president of enterprise shared services, which included oversight of technology end user services, national facilities services and national pharmacy operations.

Before that, Daniels was senior vice president of Kaiser Permanente’s information technology for health plan and hospital operations. He also has served in global IT leadership roles at JP Morgan Chase and Capital One.

“Kaiser Permanente is well recognized as a leader in the use of health IT, and I’ve been privileged to be a part of many of the innovations in the past few years," Daniels said in a prepared statement. “I am now honored to lead the team that provides technology to enable Kaiser Permanente to lead the nation in transforming care and coverage in support of total health.”
