Schade Leaves University of Michigan, Takes Interim CIO Post at University Hospitals Health System
Sue Schade has left her position as chief information officer for the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHHC) to work as a consultant and interim executive with Huntsville, Texas-based Next Wave Health Advisors. Her first assignment will be as interim CIO at Cleveland-based University Hospitals Health System.
Schade was hired by UMHHC in 2012 to oversee the launch of its new electronic health record system. The UMHHC includes 3 hospitals totaling 990 beds and over 120 clinics throughout Michigan and beyond. . In her role, Schade provided direction and oversight to information technology initiatives at UMHHC and worked closely with the CIO for the U-M Medical School and collaborates with the University of Michigan CIO on shared infrastructure initiatives.
Prior to that, she was CIO of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, which received national recognition for its Balanced Scorecard initiative under her leadership.
Schade comes to University Hospitals, which has 150 locations throughout northeast Ohio, to fill in after John Foley, who had been CIO since 2012, left to take a position as executive vice president for strategy and business development at Rochester Regional Health in New York. The health system has a 1,032-bed, tertiary medical center, University Hospitals, an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University.
Schade has been an member of both HIMSS and CHIME. She was the recipient of the 2014 John E. Gall CIO of the Year Award, named in honor of the late John E. Gall, Jr., who pioneered the implementation of the first fully integrated medical information system in the world at California’s El Camino Hospital in the 1960s.
