Quality Systems, Inc., parent company of NextGen, has entered into an agreement to acquire Opus. Austin, TX-based Opus has been selling its Web-based, ‘CCHIT-certified inpatient EMR that includes clinical documentation, order management, clinical data repository, and a laboratory information system. The company was founded in 1987, originally as an LIS vendor, but later expanded into a full EMR through a partnership with UHS out of PA, whose 20+ hospitals use Opus as there clinical suite. Quality Systems will integrate the Opus EMR with its previous purchase of Sphere Health Systems, Inc., which offered the "Spirit" hospital information system, comprised primarily of financial systems. Adding both with NextGen's leading ambulatory EMR product will give them a full complement of applications across the continuum of care, and an excellent entree into the small hospital market.
