HIMSS Blog

Tuesday, Feb. 26

Just a quick introduction, I recently joined the staff at Healthcare Informatics as associate editor after spending the last few years working as a medical writer. Prior to that, I wrote for a smaller publication that covers healthcare information technology. So while I’m not quite a stranger to health IT, I was a stranger to HIMSS until a few days ago.

So far, the experience has surpassed my expectations in many ways. As I walk up and down the rows at the exhibit halls taking in “the scene” with the awe transparent on my face, I look just like the tourists who parade around Times Square in New York City staring up at the tall buildings with their mouths wide open. HIMSS is my Times Square. I just can’t get over the size of some of the booths and the very detailed displays (did you see the orchard?).

And while I’m learning quite a bit about the trends in wireless networking and getting briefed on the latest software, I’m also learning a few tricks of the trade that other reporters have known for years. For instance, you need to get to the media room very early to stake out a workspace. I mean, really early. I’m thinking of camping outside it tonight as if I’m waiting for to buy tickets for Bruce Springsteen concert (as a native of NJ, I’m inclined to get a plug for the Boss).

Also, wearing comfortable shoes isn’t just a good idea; it’s absolutely necessary. Let’s just say that sporting heals (ones that are new, no less) to HIMSS is one rookie mistake I won’t be repeating.

So please excuse me if you see me wearing sneakers or staring at a booth like it’s the Empire State Building. I’m new at all this. But so far, I’m loving every minute of it.
