Royal Philips Electronics (the Netherlands) is acquiring Tomcat Systems Ltd., a cardiovascular information systems supplier based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Through this acquisition — the terms of which were not disclosed — Philips is looking to expand the use of IT in healthcare to improve patient outcomes and help hospitals work more efficiently, according to the company. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2008, at which time Tomcat will become part of Philips’ Healthcare Informatics business group.

Tomcat’s software looks to address both the clinical and operational needs of a cardiovascular service line by connecting with clinical information systems and PACS, providing scheduling, staff and resource management, cost capturing, and the generation of reports and statistical information.
