The Air Force Surgeon General (Washington, D.C.) has selected Houston-based Shipcom Wireless, Inc. to evaluate the uses of RFID technology across the Air Force Medical Service, and pilot RFID systems in clinical operations at the Medical Center at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.

Shipcom says it will assess existing RFID implementations at Air Force medical centers using its HOCAM (Hospital Operational and Clinical Assessment Model) and provide recommendations on how the Air Force can leverage RFID and related technologies to improve patient care and clinical processes. The company will also model and implement RFID solutions at Keesler Medical Center.

The medical treatment facilities at Keesler include a 78-bed inpatient hospital, outpatient clinics, a clinical research laboratory and aeromedical facilities serving Air Force, Army and Navy bases in the southeastern United States.
