Trinity Health, a 44-hospital system based in Novi, Mich., has gone live with the first stage of Salt Lake City-based Medicity, Inc.’s Novo Grid solution, establishing an electronic health information exchange (HIE) with 297 affiliated physician practices and 991 physicians in three months. Through the implementation, Trinity aims to improve care coordination by offering community physicians secure, real-time electronic access to the health system’s clinical data. According to the company, the Grid deploys intelligent software agents that enable physician offices to receive patient data directly into and EHR or, for paper-based practices, into an electronic “dropbox” accessible via a standard web browser.

Currently, three hospitals — St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, St. Joseph Mercy Livingston, and St. Joseph Mercy Saline — are connected with physician practices. The ongoing deployment includes linking four hospitals and physician practices and exchanging additional data such as laboratory results and face sheets, says Medicity.

Trinity Health is the fourth-largest Catholic health care system in the country. In addition to its 44 hospitals, it operates 379 outpatient facilities, 33 long-term care facilities, and numerous home health offices and hospice programs in eight states.
