Obama Nominates Berwick as CMS Administrator

On Monday, President Obama nominated Donald M. Berwick, M.D., president and CEO of the Cambridge, Mass.-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement

On Monday, President Obama nominated Donald M. Berwick, M.D., president and CEO of the Cambridge, Mass.-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), to be administrator of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

In announcing the nomination, the President said in a statement, “Dr. Berwick has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for patients and providing better care at lower cost. That’s one of the core missions facing our next CMS administrator, and I’m confident that Don will be an outstanding leader for the agency and the millions of Americans it serves.”

In addition to his IHI position, Berwick is also currently a clinical professor of pediatrics and health care policy at the Harvard Medical School, and a professor of health policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is also a pediatrician, adjunct staff in the Department of Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital, and a consultant in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital. A graduate of Harvard College, Berwick holds a master in public policy degree from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He received his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School.
