After an eight-week implementation period, Broomfield Hospital (part of Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust in the U.K) is rolling out BEDS, Scotland-based ExtraMed’s real-time, electronic patient-flow system.
A Web-based system, BEDS allows patient flow information to be accessed from anywhere in the hospital through a range of electronic devices — from PCs, to PDAs and, most commonly, large electronic whiteboards, says the company. At Mid Essex, the BEDS screen has been configured to display the location of patients in the ward, the responsible consultant and the patient’s planned discharge date. Ward staff can also view any actions outstanding for the patient, notes on the patient’s specific needs or illness and any planned movements to other wards.
Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust provides acute hospital-based services to a population of approximately 350,000 people living in and around the towns of Chelmsford, Maldon and Witham.
