According to a study by Washington, D.C.-based Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC), physicians are reporting major barriers to using advanced e-prescribing features.
The study indicates that while physicians were positive about the basic features of e-prescribing, products often lacked advanced features, or if they had them, physicians did not use them because of implementation hurdles or the perception that they did not add value.
Authors claim that key study findings include: challenges to maintaining complete patient medication lists; limited use of clinical decision support; difficulty obtaining accurate patient-specific formulary information; and limited connectivity with pharmacies and mail-order PBMs.
