Retail pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) are collaborating to unite two major health information networks, St. Paul, Minn.-based RxHub and Alexandria, Va.-based SureScripts, in a move that the organizations hope will accelerate the adoption of e-prescribing.

RxHub, which was founded by CVS Caremark Corporation, Express Scripts, Inc. and Medco Health Solutions, Inc., and Surescripts, formed by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), will combine to form a single network for e-prescriptions and the exchange of health information.

The merger intends to combine the strengths of the two companies with a shared focus on more access to patient medication history to form a single suite of comprehensive services, according to the companies. Through the combined organization, physicians will be able to transmit electronic prescriptions and renewal requests to both retail and mail-order pharmacies, they say.
