A new report from Orem, Utah-based KLAS asserts that many hospitals are using a document management and imaging (DMI) solution to ease the transition between paper and a full EMR.

KLAS evaluates the DMI solutions of 14 vendors in the study and finds the vast majority of hospitals are still crossing the chasm between paper and a full EMR, and many are using DMI as a solution.

According to KLAS, DMI is dominated by best-of-breed vendors, and that among core clinical vendors, only McKesson’s DMI solution was rated above average by providers, although Siemens’ solution was also praised for strong functionality and workflow features. Other enterprise vendors, such as Cerner, Eclipsys and MEDITECH, have been criticized for offering DMI solutions that have functional deficiencies and inconsistent support, says KLAS.

According to the report, best-of-breed vendors MedPlus and Hyland are the clear leaders in DMI.
