The Washington-based Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released its final report on medical identity theft as part of an effort to proactively assess and evaluate the scope of the medical identity theft problem in the United States.

The report summarizes health IT and medical identify theft issues and proposes potential actions for the Federal government and other stakeholders in the areas of prevention, detection, and remediation of medical identify theft. It states that the use of HIT has the potential for being a powerful tool for prevention and detection of medical identity theft.
