The HIT Policy Committee has approved recommendations made by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Privacy and Security Tiger Team that would create health information exchange credentials and help in protecting personal health information.
The Tiger Team’s recommendations, which were unanimously approved by the Policy Committee, would establish digital exchange credentials including verifying a provider’s identity and allowing providers to delegate the verification process to authorized credentialing service providers.
The ONC will assist in the creation of policy regarding the credentialing process, which must include a requirement to validate the identity of the organization or individual requesting a credential. State governments would also have the option of requiring additional rules for the authorized credentialing service providers.
