The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, part of Wash.-based HHS, awarded approximately $450,000 to McLean-Va.-based Booz Allen Hamilton to assess and evaluate the scope of the medical identity theft problem in the United States.

The first phase of this project includes the development of an environmental scan to assess the scope of the problem and to serve as the baseline for developing prevention, detection, and remediation strategies. The second phase will explore how medical identity theft should be considered and addressed in a health IT environment. The third phase of the project will result in a final report and roadmap, summarizing key issues and possible next steps.

A one-day town hall meeting will be held in October 2008 in the Washington, DC, area and will be open to the public.
