To speed up, simplify and standardize a national physician performance assessment process, Bridges to Excellence (BTE), is creating a series of real-time pilots with independent performance assessment organizations using EMR data.

The pilots, BTE says, will leverage the work done at local levels by groups such as MassPRO in Massachusetts and the MN Community Measurement Collaborative in Minnesota to give health plans credible data on which to base local and national P4P programs. According to BTE, through this effort, it will determine the importance of rapid performance feedback tied to incentives in getting physicians to continuously improve the quality of their care.

Early pilots are in progress with more extensive efforts beginning in second quarter 2008. BTE says up to five EMR organizations plus two HIEs will be participating.
