Amsterdam-based Gemalto has been selected, along with its local partner Bestcomp, to provide the digital security solution for the national e-Healthcare program in Azerbaijan.

As part of the initiative — which is the country’s first large-scale e-Government project — Gemalto will deliver 3 million Sealys microprocessor cards and middleware. Bestcomp, an IT provider based in Baku, Azerbaijan, will assist with the integration. The healthcare smart cards are designed to simplify the submission of claims to the country’s social security services by digitizing claims forms, according to the company.

The project began its pilot phase in February 2008 and will be progressively rolled out over the next two years.
