IBM, headquartered in Armonk, N.Y, and the Mayo Clinic, based in Rochester, Minn., are slated to present test results for a 3-D imaging application at the upcoming International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging Conference (April 12-15, 2007) in Washington, DC.
According to IBM and Mayo, the imaging application allows radiologists to detect growth or shrinkage of tumors in seconds, rather than minutes or hours.
Both companies claim that the Mayo imaging application is able to register medical images approximately 50 times faster than a solution running on a traditional processor configuration. The Mayo application can align two sets of medical images obtained at different dates or from different imaging devices such as MRI or CT.
