Today Verizon unveiled its new cloud-based health information exchange. This solution allows providers that join the exchange to see a unified view of a patient’s health records by taking all of their clinical data and translating it into a standardized format that can be read by all.
The new service will be delivered via Verizon’s cloud computing platform, so all customers need is an Internet connection to gain access, while being able to use their existing hardware and software, which can minimize upfront capital expenses. Capabilities of several key technology and service providers–MEDfx, MedVirginia and Oracle–will be integrated into the platform, with key features including a clinical portal, record locator service, cross-enterprise patient index, and secure clinical messaging capabilities.

Among the clients planning to adopt Verizon’s new platform is MedVirginia, a health care organization based in Richmond and serving central Virginia. Formed in 2000 by a cross section of Virginia health care providers, the nonprofit organization focuses on initiatives to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care through the innovative use of health IT, including the 2006 launch of MedVirginia Solution, a community-based health information exchange.

The Verizon Health Information Exchange is the latest in a series of initiatives that the company has implemented to help accelerate the use of technology in health care. For example, in March, Verizon Business launched Verizon Medical Data Exchange, an information technology platform that enables the digital sharing of physician-dictated patient notes. Last November, the company introduced Verizon Telehealth Collaboration Services, a suite of services that enables health care providers to consult remotely with patients and other providers, offer continuing medical education and training to medical professionals.
