Roshan (Kabul, Afghanistan), a provider of telecom operations, has launched a telemedicine solution to expand healthcare access and delivery across Afghanistan.

Using wireless video consultation and digital image transfer, the telemedicine project will provide hospitals in Afghanistan with access to specialist diagnosis and treatment and training expertise from abroad, says Roshan. According to the company, additional applications of the project include the ability to send real-time X-ray, ultrasound, and CAT Scans (Computerized Axial Tomography) for evaluation.

Roshan has teamed with Cisco (San Jose, Calif.), Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH, Karachi, Pakistan), French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC, Paris) and other technology suppliers to launch the project. The first phase of the project has linked FMIC in Kabul to AKUH in Karachi, says Roshan, whereas subsequent phases will link major Afghan regional hospitals to the FMIC. Eventually, the links can be extended to medical institutions in Europe and North America, says the organization.
