The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC, Baltimore) and IBM (Armonk, N.Y.) are collaborating to create The Multicore Computing Center (MC2), a facility that will focus on supercomputing research related to medical imaging, aerospace/defense, financial services, and weather/climate change prediction.

The MC2 will bring to UMBC a high-performance computational test laboratory based on the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.), jointly developed by IBM, Sony Corp. (Tokyo), Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) and Toshiba Corp. (Tokyo), says the computing company.

According to IBM, it awarded UMBC a significant "gift" to support the development of this new center, which researchers describe as an "orchestra" of one of the world's most powerful supercomputing chips.
