UMBC/IBM Project Touches Imaging

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC, Baltimore) and IBM (Armonk, N.Y.) are collaborating to create The Multicore Computing Center

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC, Baltimore) and IBM (Armonk, N.Y.) are collaborating to create The Multicore Computing Center (MC2), a facility that will focus on supercomputing research related to medical imaging, aerospace/defense, financial services, and weather/climate change prediction.

The MC2 will bring to UMBC a high-performance computational test laboratory based on the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.), jointly developed by IBM, Sony Corp. (Tokyo), Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) and Toshiba Corp. (Tokyo), says the computing company.

According to IBM, it awarded UMBC a significant "gift" to support the development of this new center, which researchers describe as an "orchestra" of one of the world's most powerful supercomputing chips.
