Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT, Toronto, Ontario) are partnering on a research project aimed at helping physicians detect subtle changes in the condition of critically ill premature babies.
Led by Dr. Carolyn McGregor, a UOIT associate professor and Canada Research Chair in Health Informatics, the project is designed to enhance clinicians’ decision-making capabilities through the use of software developed by IBM Research that ingests a constant stream of biomedical data along with environmental data gathered from advanced sensors and more traditional monitoring equipment on and around the babies, according to the company.
Physicians in neonatal intensive care units at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and two other international hospitals are participating in the study.
