AHIC Successor, Inc. (Washington) has established a board of directors to lead its efforts to accelerate the adoption of a nationwide, interoperable health information system.

The new organization is being established in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a successor to AHIC, a federal advisory committee founded in 2005 to unite the public and private sectors in a cooperative effort to provide the Secretary with recommendations to accelerate the adoption of HIT. AHIC will soon be dissolving and is expected to complete its work by the end of December, 2008. AHIC was initially founded to advise HHS on the acceleration, development and adoption of health information technology.

AHIC Successor will build on the accomplishments of the original AHIC, it says. Its creation will establish the effort’s leadership in the private sector, while maintaining significant public representation. The board of directors was announced at a meeting of the existing AHIC. According to the organization, the 15 members of AHIC Successor board represent a broad range of stakeholders from the healthcare and IT communities.
