Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN), based in South Bend, Ind., announced partnership with Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend

Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN), based in South Bend, Ind., announced partnership with Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend today. The new academic partnership will mean an enhanced educational curriculum that focuses specifically on the role and significance of health information exchange (HIE) and electronic health records (EHR) in modern health care for students training to be medical professionals.

Prior to this initiative, medical students have traditionally received limited training for the technologies currently being utilized by providers in the Michiana area by MHIN. With the development of this continued training curriculum, however, medical students at the South Bend campus will begin learning about the importance of HIE in their first year.

The first two years of the curriculum are scheduled to include tutorials, demonstrations, case studies, and simulations that will prepare the students for their on-site training in their clinical clerkships and familiarize them with the systems they will see in their profession. The clinical clerkships in the third and fourth years of the program will then enable students to have hands-on experience with the actual systems used by the physicians with whom they will be working in medical facilities across the community.
