The Summary Report catalogs the first year's work and details common elements that will be used in NHIN trial implementations. The trials will target state and regional health information exchanges (HIEs). The request for proposals for the trials is available at www.fedbizopps.gov. This phase of the NHIN development effort is expected to be conducted over 12 months (with two option years).

During the past year, four prototype architectures were developed, tested and demonstrated. This collaborative work was completed by consortia led by Accenture, Computer Sciences Corporation, IBM and Northrop Grumman.

The report, compiled by Gartner Inc., can be found at www.hhs.gov/healthit.
