The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in Philadelphia has rolled out Sunrise Medication Management from Atlanta-based Eclipsys, converting 11,000 prescriptions for its 20-year-old pharmacy, the company says.

The product gives HUP a single pharmacy formulary with 3,000 drugs, as well as the ability to automate its medication management system from prescribing to dispensing to administering the medicine. According to Eclipsys, Sunrise contains evidence-based practices and features such as “high alerts” for certain substances and “tall man lettering” that makes drugs that sound the same look different on the screen.

HUP plans to put every Penn facility on the same system once the conversion is completed at Pennsylvania Hospital and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, the company says. This would place Penn among the 3 percent of U.S. hospitals that have installed a fully integrated, closed-loop medication management system.
