Although the majority of hospitals are using electronic medical records (EMRs), over half are still printing and distributing paper lab and imaging reports, according to recent College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (Ann Arbor, Mich.) surveys.
A survey conducted in May of this year by CHIME shows that 80 percent of responding CIOs are in the process of implementing an EMR within their organization, with another 14 percent reporting that their organization is in the EMR selection process. However, in a separate survey in June, 59 percent of respondents said that, despite the use of an EMR at their organization, lab reports continue to be printed and distributed on paper.
Comments indicate that most have plans to terminate paper distribution in the future.
