Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum (R) has announced that two laptops stolen from the Miami offices of AvMed Health Plans in Decemeber contained personal information on 1.19 million state residents, including addresses, dates of birth, health information and Social Security numbers.
The company originally reported the laptops stolen in December, informing some 360,000 individuals that their personal data might have been compromised. However, a recent and more comprehensive investigation revealed that an additional 860,000 individuals’ information might be at risk.
AvMed President Ed Hannum announced that the company is strengthening its data security strategies to avoid similar accidents in the future. AvMed also said it would begin notifying affected customers by mail and offering no-cost identity protection for two years through Debix Identity Protection Network.
